Waitlists

Everything you need to know about joining waitlists and getting into the classes you need

About Waitlists

A waitlist lets you get in line for a full class. If a seat opens up, you'll be notified and have a limited time to register. Being on a waitlist does not guarantee enrollment, so always have a backup plan!

Understanding Waitlists

A waitlist is an electronic list of students who wish to enroll in a class that is currently full. When a seat becomes available, students on the waitlist are notified in order and given a chance to register.

Important: Joining a waitlist does NOT guarantee enrollment. Not all classes offer waitlists, and you must meet all registration requirements including prerequisites.

Yes, you can join waitlists for different subjects. However, you cannot join multiple waitlists for the same course (for example, you can't waitlist two different sections of MATH 100).

To join a waitlist, you must:

  • Have an active student account with no registration holds (financial, academic, etc.)
  • Have completed all prerequisite courses for the class
  • Not have any time conflicts with your current schedule
  • Not exceed the maximum unit limit (enrolled + waitlisted units combined)

Not all classes offer a waitlist. The waitlist option may not appear if:

  • The instructor or department has disabled waitlisting for that section
  • The waitlist is already full
  • The waitlist has closed for the term
  • You have a registration hold on your account
  • You haven't met the prerequisite requirements

How to Join & Check Your Status

  2. Find the class using Find Classes or Enter CRNs.
  3. If the class is full and offers a waitlist, set the course Action in the Summary panel to Waitlist.
  4. Click Submit. The Status will change to Waitlisted.
  1. Sign in to myGateway.
  2. Click Register for classes from the home widget.
  3. Select the correct term.
  4. In the lower panel, click Schedule Details. Your waitlist position appears next to the section info.
  5. Watch your college email/myGateway Notifications for updates.
Tip: Check your Notifications daily! Email notifications can be delayed or filtered to spam.
  1. Sign in to myGateway and open Register for Classes.
  2. Select the correct term.
  3. In the Summary panel, find the waitlisted course.
  4. Change the Action to Remove from Waitlist (or Drop).
  5. Click Submit to confirm.

Notifications & Deadlines

Waitlists open when registration begins for each term, based on your enrollment priority date.

Waitlists close before the start of each term. After waitlists close, you must attend the first class meeting and request an Add Code from the instructor.

Check the Searchable Class Schedule (opens in new tab) for specific waitlist deadline dates each term.

If a seat becomes available, you will receive a Notification in myGateway. We also send an email to your preferred email address on file as a backup.

Warning: Students have reported undelivered, delayed, and/or blank emails. The college is NOT responsible for email issues. Check myGateway Notifications daily!

To ensure you receive notifications, make sure your preferred email address is up to date. You can update your contact information using the Student Information Change Form (opens in new tab).

You have 48 hours to register for the class, or until midnight before the class starts—whichever comes first.

If you miss the deadline, your name is automatically removed from the waitlist and the next student is notified. You would need to re-add yourself (if the waitlist is still open) or attend the first class to request an Add Code.

Registering from the Waitlist

  1. During your notification window, open Register for Classes and select the term.
  2. In the Summary panel, change the course Action from Waitlist to Register.
  3. Click Submit and confirm the Status shows Registered.
Note: Waitlists close before the start of each term. You are not enrolled while on the waitlist.

Add Codes are typically usable after the first class meeting. Follow these steps:

  1. In myGateway, click Register for classes and select the term.
  2. In the Summary panel, find your waitlisted course. Change the Action to Remove from Waitlist and click Submit.
  3. Add the section again using Enter CRNs or Find Classes.
  4. When you see Authorization required, enter the instructor's Add Code exactly as given.
  5. Set the Action to Register and click Submit.
  6. Verify the Status changes to Registered.

If the code fails or you get an error, contact the instructor or department for help.

If a Seat Doesn't Open

You must attend the first class meeting. Your name will be on the instructor's roster as waitlisted. If seats are available, the instructor may provide you with an Add Authorization Code.

Remember: Waitlisting does not guarantee enrollment.

You can still attend the first day of class and ask the instructor for an Add Code. Instructors may have seats available and can issue Add Codes at their discretion.

However, keep in mind that students who are on the waitlist typically have priority over students who are not. If the waitlist option is available for a class, we strongly recommend adding yourself to it.

Tip: Always add yourself to the waitlist if the option is available—it gives you the best chance of getting into the class since your name will appear on the instructor's roster.

Yes, instructors can issue Add Codes to any student, regardless of waitlist status. However, most instructors give priority to waitlisted students. If you couldn't join the waitlist, attend the first class and speak with the instructor directly.

Troubleshooting

Common error messages and solutions:

  • "Time conflict" — The class overlaps with another course. Resolve the conflict before joining.
  • "Prerequisite not met" — You haven't completed the required prerequisite. Check with Counseling if you believe this is an error.
  • "Maximum hours exceeded" — You've reached the unit limit for enrolled + waitlisted classes combined.
  • "Waitlist full" — The waitlist has reached capacity. Try again later or plan to crash.
  • "Hold on account" — You have a registration hold. Check myGateway for details.

If issues persist, contact Admissions & Records (opens in new tab) for help.

If you were dropped (for non-payment, non-attendance, etc.), you may rejoin the waitlist if:

  • The waitlist is still open
  • There is space on the waitlist
  • You've resolved any issues that caused you to be dropped

If the waitlist has closed, attend the first class meeting and request an Add Code.

You cannot be waitlisted for two classes with overlapping meeting times. If a seat opens in one waitlisted class, you'll need to decide which class to keep and drop the other to resolve the conflict before registering.

Fees & Financial Aid

No, there is no fee to join a waitlist. You are only charged tuition and fees once you are officially enrolled in a class.

Waitlisted classes do not count toward your enrolled units for financial aid purposes. Your aid is calculated based on classes you are officially registered for.

Make sure you're enrolled in enough units to meet financial aid eligibility requirements. Waitlisted classes should not be counted toward your enrollment goals when planning your schedule.
