Incomplete Grades
An Incomplete grade may be assigned when extenuating circumstances prevent a student from finishing all course requirements by the end of the term. Learn what this means for your record and what steps to take.
What Is an Incomplete Grade?
If you are unable to complete all course requirements within the given timeframe due to extenuating circumstances, your instructor may assign an Incomplete grade. You must arrange with the instructor to complete the outstanding work by a specified deadline. Once that work is submitted and evaluated, the Incomplete is converted to a permanent letter grade.
You have up to one year from the end of the term in which the course was taken to complete the remaining work. If the work is not finished within that period, the default grade documented at the time the Incomplete was assigned will be recorded as your final grade.
Incomplete Grade Types
INB
Default Grade: B
Incomplete grade that converts to a B if outstanding work is not completed within one year.
INC
Default Grade: C
Incomplete grade that converts to a C if outstanding work is not completed within one year.
IND
Default Grade: D
Incomplete grade that converts to a D if outstanding work is not completed within one year.
INF
Default Grade: F
Incomplete grade that converts to an F if outstanding work is not completed within one year.
INNP
Default Grade: NP
Incomplete grade that converts to a No Pass if outstanding work is not completed within one year.
Important Rules
- Documented agreement required. The conditions for removing the Incomplete and the final grade to be assigned must be documented by the instructor and provided to you before the Incomplete is assigned.
- Does not affect your GPA or units attempted. Incomplete grades are not factored into grade point average calculations and are not counted toward units attempted while they remain on your record.
- No re-enrollment while Incomplete is active. You may not re-enroll in a course for which an Incomplete grade symbol appears on your transcript.
- Instructor may change the default grade. At any time during the one-year period, the instructor may submit an official Grade Change form to Admissions & Records to assign a grade other than the documented default.
One-Year Deadline
All remaining coursework must be submitted and evaluated within one year of the end of the term. If the deadline passes without completion, the default grade on file will automatically become your final grade — no exceptions.
Contact your instructor as early as possible to confirm the exact deadline and the specific requirements needed to clear the Incomplete.
