Dismissal Policy
Re-Admission
A student who has been dismissed because of either poor academic achievement or poor progress may be considered for readmission on a conditional basis. The student must file a Petition for Readmission with the Admissions and Records Office. After the petition is reviewed by the Academic Standards Committee, the student will be notified by email.
What does it mean to be academically dismissed from Fullerton College?
- Students cannot register for classes; a hold is placed on their record until they submit a Petition for Readmission and are approved.
- If approved for readmission, students may be limited to 12 units or less per semester.
- Scholastic dismissal will be permanently noted on the student’s transcript.
Why was I academically dismissed from Fullerton College?
- Students who are on probation for more than three semesters in a row may be dismissed.
- Academic Dismissal: Happens if your cumulative GPA stays below 2.0 for three consecutive semesters while on academic probation.
- Progress Dismissal: Happens if you are on progress probation for three consecutive semesters.
What steps must I take to be readmitted after being academically dismissed?
- If you have been dismissed, you may petition for readmission through the Admissions and Records Office. You’ll need to show a serious intent to succeed and have a realistic academic goal. If your petition is approved, you will return on academic or progress probation, and your enrollment may be limited. Steps for readmission:
- Meet with a counselor to discuss your academic performance and plan for future success (strongly recommended).
- Complete the Petition for Readmission, including a written explanation of how you plan to improve your academic performance.
- After your petition is reviewed by the Academic Standards Committee, you will be notified of the decision by email.
What happens if my petition is denied?
- If your petition for readmission is not approved, you won’t be able to enroll in classes at Fullerton College or Cypress College.
How long do I have to wait for my readmission petition to be reviewed?
- It takes 7 to 10 business days to process your readmission petition. We’ll email you the results once a decision is made.
How can I improve my academic performance and chances of being readmitted? Are there any academic support services available to help me improve my performance?
- Ask for help. Counselors, faculty, and staff are here to support your success—don’t hesitate to reach out!
- Improve your transcript. Retake classes in which you earned a D or F to quickly raise your GPA and get off probation. Earning a C or higher will replace a previous substandard grade. If you’re on progress probation, aim to complete more than 50% of your units each semester. If you need to drop a class, do so within the first two weeks to avoid getting a “W.”
- Take fewer units. Consider enrolling in fewer classes so you can focus more on each course—especially if you have work or family responsibilities. Taking on too much can lead to repeating classes and spending extra time and money.
- Make an educational plan. Meet with a counselor to ensure you’re on the right track for your goals.
- Take a counseling course. Consider enrolling in COUN 151 F to learn strategies for success.
- Practice effective study skills. Use proven learning strategies to help you stay organized and succeed in your classes.
- Use campus resources. Talk to your professors, use tutoring services, or study in the library if home is too distracting. If possible, find a job on campus to stay connected.
- Drop classes before deadlines. Always check your schedule to make sure your dropped classes are reflected. Don’t assume your professor will drop you!
Will my academic dismissal be reflected on my academic record/transcript?
- Yes, a hold will be placed on your record, and “Scholastically Dismissed” will appear on your academic transcript.
Will my academic dismissal affect my enrollment priority?
- Regulations state that students must be in good academic standing to qualify for enrollment priority. Registration appointments will be issued in accordance with these regulations.
